Part of the theme in The Majestic Spirit was originally written for a brass quintet that was never completed. The theme did not seem complete so it was extended. The new extended theme became the inspiration and music material for a concert band piece. Pieces of the theme are utilized throughout the composition as a motive. The theme also is set in a three voice canon many times during the piece. The theme is first set in a 6/8 time signature. With one of the three voice canons in the piece, the 6/8 theme is overlapped on to a 4/4 time signature and set against a new melody in a nine voice canon. The middle section is slow and includes a new melody first played by the flutes. The last section of the piece is back to the original fast tempo with the melody in a three voice canon set against a one bar ostinato pattern, a single note ostinato bass line and the new melody of the first section in a nine voice canon.
