God Rest Ye
for SATB choir and piano

        God Rest Ye began with a commission to write a piece for the St. Thomas choir for a Christmas service.  Most of the musical material was transcribed for the concert band piece God Rest Ye.  Text was added using verses 1, 2, 3 and 6 of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen."  For the second verse, choral harmony parts were created.  The main melody in the second verse bounces between the soprano and tenor to alto and bass.

God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay,
Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day;
To save us all from Satan's power when we were gone astray.

Refrain

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy;
O tidings of comfort and joy

In Bethlehem, in Jewry, a blessed Babe was born,
And laid within a manger upon this blessed morn;
To which His mother Mary did nothing take in scorn.

Refrain

From God our heavenly Father a blessed angel came;
And unto certain shepherds brought tidings of the same;
How that in Bethlehem was born the son of God by name.

Refrain

But when to Bethlehem they came where our dear Savior lay,
They found Him in a manger where oxen feed on hay;
His mother Mary kneeling unto the Lord did pray.
